Former Indian boxer Kabilan Sai Ashok is set to make history by becoming the youngest Indian to officiate at the Olympic Games. The 32-year-old has been appointed as a Referee Judge for the boxing events at the Paris 2024 Olympics, which commenced on Friday.
Remarkable Journey by Kabilan Sai Ashok
Kabilan Sai Ashok’s appointment marks a significant milestone in Indian boxing. He is only the fourth Indian to officiate at the Olympics since 1904 and the first to have represented the country both as a player and an official at a World Championship.
Currently serving as a boxing administrator at the Army Sports Institute in Pune, Ashok has also achieved the distinction of becoming the first Indian president of the World Military Boxing Council.
Rapid rise through ranks
Kabilan Sai Ashok’s career progression has been exceptional. He was fast-tracked from a two-star to a three-star referee, a testament to his skills and dedication. His appointment to the Paris Olympics is the culmination of years of hard work and commitment to the sport.
India’s participation in Olympic boxing officiating has been sporadic, with the last Indian officials, Kishen Narsi and Jay Kowli, officiating at the London 2012 Olympics. Ashok’s presence at Paris 2024 is a positive step forward for Indian boxing.
As the Olympics unfold, Ashok’s role as a referee will be crucial in ensuring fair play and upholding the integrity of the sport. His participation is a matter of pride for Indian boxing and a testament to the country’s growing stature in the international arena.
