PVL 2023: Jerome Vinith has been a vital cog for the Indian Volleyball team over the last decade. The Indian ace who has also led the national side in the past believes that the future of Volleyball in the country is dependent on the Prime Volleyball League (PVL). Speaking in an excusive interview to InsideSport, Vinith said, “In the current situation, Indian Volleyball’s future depends on PVL. Every player in the country is now looking forward to play in the league every year as all the other things in the national scenario is uncertain. We believe the league can serve as a feeder system to the Indian Volleyball team.”
Jerome Vinith’s Calicut Heroes bowed out from the semifinal of the league last year. The 29-year old Universal is confident of a better show in the PVL 2023. “We started out training camp 20-25 days back and preparations are in full swing. Coach Kishore Kumar has brought in a lot of new things to our training regime and I am confident that it will work well for us this year.”

Calicut Heroes have a huge fanbase. The supporters of the team have named themselves as “Chempada”. With the fans set to watch the matches from the stadium this year, Vinith looks forward to the “Chempada” cheering for their team from the stands. “For every sportsperson, it’s a great feeling to play in front of the fans. This year we are eagerly looking forward to seeing them in the stands. Apart from Kochi, be it Bengaluru or Hyderabad, everywhere we can expect the Chempada to come and support us. Their support and energy always helps us gives us an extra boost,” he said.
Vinith, who hails from Tamil Nadu has played more than 30 matches representing the National side. Indian is currently ranked outside the Top 50 in the International Volleyball rankings. He stated that one of the main reasons for the low ranking is due to the fact that India is not playing enough matches. “When teams don’t play enough matches, automatically the rankings will go down.”

Back then I think we were within the Top 30. But after that the amount of International matches that we play reduced and hence we are in this position,” he stated. It is to be noted that Indian Volleyball team’s last outing was during the Tokyo Olympic qualification in 2021.
The upcoming challenge for the Indian Volleyball team will be the Asian Games. The multisport event is set to be played in September this year. Speaking about India’s chances in the event he said, “In the 2018 Asian Games, we finished in the 12th spot. But this time I am very confident of much better result. Because Prime Volleyball has changed lot of things for the players.”

“Players have now become a lot more professional. We have now got separate trainers and psychologists to look after us . So I am very confident that in the upcoming Asian Games, we will give our best-ever result,” he signed off.
Calicut Heroes will begin their campaign in the second edition of the Prime Volleyball League on 5th February. They will face debutants Mumbai Meteors.
