Indian hockey legend PR Sreejesh, widely regarded as the ‘Custodian of India’s Dreams,’ has expressed a deep admiration for former Indian cricket coach Rahul Dravid’s coaching philosophy. Sreejesh, who has been a stalwart of Indian hockey for nearly two decades, aspires to follow a similar path as Dravid by starting his coaching journey with junior teams before gradually progressing to the senior national team.
PR Sreejesh: Vision for Future
Speaking at a recent interaction, Sreejesh outlined his ambitions for his post-retirement career. “I want to become a coach. That was always my plan, but now the question is when,” he shared. “After retirement, family comes first, and I need to discuss this with them. Now you have to listen to your wife a little bit,” he added with a smile.
Sreejesh envisions beginning his coaching journey with the junior teams, similar to how Dravid worked with India’s U-19 and A teams before eventually leading the senior cricket team. “The way I wanted to start is with the juniors. Rahul Dravid is an example. It’s like you develop a bunch of players, get them into the senior team, and let them follow you,” Sreejesh explained.
Building Future of Indian Hockey Team
Sreejesh’s plan is meticulously thought out. He aims to begin coaching juniors this year, with an eye on the Junior World Cup in 2025. “By 2028, I hope to have produced 20 to 40 players who can be integrated into the senior team. By 2030, we could have 30-35 players ready for the senior side,” he outlined.
Looking even further ahead, Sreejesh has set his sights on the chief coach’s position by 2032. “If India gets to host the 2036 Olympic Games, I want to be the India coach,” he declared, revealing his long-term goals.
Legendary Career of PR Sreejesh
At 36, PR Sreejesh has already cemented his place as an icon in Indian hockey. His remarkable career includes winning back-to-back Olympic bronze medals, among many other accolades. As he looks toward the future, his desire to nurture the next generation of Indian hockey stars echoes the dedication and commitment he has shown throughout his playing career.
Sreejesh’s aspirations to coach juniors reflect his belief in the importance of building a strong foundation for the national team. Like Rahul Dravid, he hopes to contribute to the growth and success of Indian sports by guiding young talents and preparing them for the global stage.
