HS Prannoy

Prannoy Haseena Sunil Kumar, born on July 17 1992, is widely known as HS Prannoy. He is an Indian badminton player who currently trains at the Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad. One of the architects of India’s historic triumph at the Thomas Cup in 2022, Prannoy is one of the senior pros in badminton circuit.

HS Prannoy has secured bronze medals at both the 2023 World Championships and the 2022 Asian Games. Prannoy was also part of India’s victorious team at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Born in Delhi, he achieved a career-high world ranking of number 6 in August 2023. He studied at Kendriya Vidyalaya Akkulam.

Early Life and Background

HS Prannoy, born to Sunil Kumar and Haseena Kumar, took up badminton at age 10, encouraged by his father, a former player. Initially rejected by coaches for singles, his talent was later spotted by national coach Pullela Gopichand, who played a crucial role in his professional development at the Gopichand Badminton Academy.

Prannoy got married to long-time partner Swetha Gomes on September 14 2022. During the 2018 World Championships, Prannoy was diagnosed with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and affected with COVID-19 in November 2020. However, he revitalized his career in late 2021, re-entering the top 10 in December. Over the past year, he has been the most consistent Indian singles player.

HS Prannoy qualified for the Paris Olympics by finishing ninth in the Race to Paris, accumulating 75,847 points. The Race to Paris takes into account the top 10 tournaments during the Olympic cycle’s qualification period, which ran from May 1, 2023, to April 28, 2024. He has defeated notable players like Chen Long, Lee Chong Wei, Taufik Hidayat, and holds a 3-2 record against Lin Dan.

Prannoy had meticulous preparation for Paris 2024, focusing on both mental and physical readiness. “In the past three to four years, I’ve adopted a different approach. Forming a support team has been crucial, and this transformation has been pivotal for my journey. Age might be just a number, but dedication and hard work shape your story,” Prannoy said during his preparation for the Paris Olympics.
