Chirag Shetty

Chirag Chandrashekhar Shetty, born in Mumbai, is an Indian men’s doubles badminton player. He and his partner, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, are the only doubles pair from India to have achieved the No. 1 ranking in the BWF World Rankings.

Born into a Tulu family to Chandrashekhar and Sujata Shetty, Chirag’s father is a hotelier. He initially trained at Uday Pawar Badminton Academy located at Gurgaon Sports Club but later moved to Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad to further enhance his skills. Chirag’s initial partner was Arjun M. R, but he was later paired with Satwiksairaj Rankireddy by coach Tan Kim Her, who believed that two tall, strong players with different skills could form a dominant pair.

Chirag is fortunate to have had supportive parents throughout his growth as a badminton player. His father, Chandrashekhar encouraged both Chirag and his sister, Arya Shetty, to take up sports. He started playing badminton at the age of 7 and always preferred individual sports. He showed great potential from a young age, becoming the badminton champion at Ryan International School.

Qualifying Events

The top 16 players got their tickets for Paris. Among these, the top eight pairs in the rankings were allowed two pairs per country, while the next best eight duos (with a maximum of one per country) got the ticket. Having finished third in the rankings, the duo also secured their place.

Training and Preparation

There is a lot of hope surrounding Chirag Shetty since, just before heading to the Olympics, he and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy are in red-hot form. They have reached the finals in all three tournaments they have played this year. Badminton national head coach Pullela Gopichand believes that they are India’s best bet for a historic medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
