Paris Paralympics: Harvinder Singh makes history with gold in men’s recurve event

Harvinder Singh, makes history as the first Indian archer to win a gold at Paralympics.

India’s recurve archer, Harvinder Singh, has added another medal to India’s tally at the Paris Paralympics, after winning the gold medal in the Men’s Individual Recurve Open event. The archer from Haryana defeated Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek in the one-sided finals by 6-0 (28-24, 28-27, 29-25).

A comfortable win for Harvinder

It was a one-sided game for the Haryanvi archer. In the first set, he scored 28 points, while Lukasz scored 24. In the second set, the Polish archer scored 27, but Harvinder ended with a 10 and scored 28 points. Harvinder comfortably won the third set 29-25.

Second medal for Harvinder

This was the second Paralympic medal for Harvinder. Earlier, at the Tokyo Paralympics, he won a bronze medal in the Individual Recurve Open event. He had also clinched a bronze medal at the Para Asian Games, along with a gold in the same event in 2018, Jakarta.

India’s 22nd medal at Paris Parlaympics

Harvinder’s medal increases India’s total to 22 medals, marking the nation’s best medal haul in a single edition, surpassing the previous record of 19 set in Tokyo. This is India’s second archery medal after Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar secured bronze in the mixed team compound open event.

This is India’s fourth gold medal at the ongoing Paris Paralympics. Earlier, para-shooter Avani Lekhara, javelin thrower Sumit Antil, and badminton player Nitesh Kumar clinched a gold medal in their respective events. Now India is at number 15 in the table.
