Controversy in Paris Olympics continues. Belgium’s triathlete Claire Michel fell sick after taking part in the women’s Olympic triathlon event. Michel reportedly fell sick during the swimming leg at the River Seine. Despite the controversy the organizers decided that the mixed event will continue as per plans.
Owing to Claire Michel’s sickness, the Belgium decided to pull out of the mixed triathlon event. Previously, the conditions of River Seine were criticized. Even so that the men’s 24 hour swimming event was cancelled after the river was deemed dirty after massive rainfall.
“The COIB and Belgian Triathlon hope that the lessons will be learned for future triathlon competitions at the Olympics,” the organisers claimed.
Despite the athlete falling sick while swimming in the tournament, the organizing committee didn’t bother to postpone the event. Although training session and the men’s 24 hours event being cancelled the organizers were unwilling to change the schedule. Among other controversies in the Paris Olympics, the swimming events have been affected the most due to the excessive pollution at River Seine.
“The latest test results confirm that the water quality of the Seine at the triathlon site has improved over the last hours, and the prospective tests indicate the water quality will be within the acceptable limits according to World Triathlon,” Paris Games organizers said.
