Paris Olympics: India keeps tradition of winning a medal in wrestling since 2008 at Olympics

India continues to maintain their tradition of winning at least a solitary medal in wrestling since 2008. Check out the wrestlers who have won India Olympic medals over the last 16 years.

Wrestling has always been the strength in Olympics for India. And rightly so, since 2008, India has been consistently delivering a medal at the Olympics. When things stood bleak at Paris Olympics, Aman Sehrawat stepped up to clinch his bronze medal to maintain and continue the tradition that India has set for the last 16 years.

It all started at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Sushil Kumar won the bronze in the 66 kg Men’s freestyle category. London 2012 was even better as Sushil clinched a silver while Yogeshwar Dutt won a bronze 60 kg freestyle category.

In Rio 2016, when the men failed, up stepped the women. Sakshi Malik won the bronze medal in the 58 kg category. India then again won 2 medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Ravi Kumar Dahiya won the silver in the 57 kg category while Bajrang Punia bagged the bronze in the 66 kg category.

And now in Paris, hopes were high for Vinesh Phogat to get the gold. But the 29 year old athlete was disqualified from the finals after being found to be 100 gm overweight in her 50 kg category. As India’s dreams came crashing down, up stepped the youngster Aman Sehrawat and went on to bag the bronze medal.
