Paris Olympics: France knock out Argentina to secure semi finals for first time 40 years

Paris Olympics: France reach semi finals of Paris Olympics after 4 decades by knocking out rivals Argentina 1-0

Argentina Football Team’s journey for the coveted gold medal in Paris Olympics has ended. Hosts France snatched up a narrow 1-0 win to eliminate Javier Mascherano and his boys in the quarterfinals. And with this win, France have managed to reach the semi finals of Olympics for the very first time in 40 years.

An early goal from Jean-Philippe Mateta was enough to seal the deal for the Les Bleus. Despite La Albiceleste trying hard to find the equalizer throughout the game, the hosts remained firm and vigilant to thwart any further attacks. However, the highlight of the game comes after the final whistle, when tempers were lost and a brawl started on the field.

Argentina were tipped as one of the favourites to win the gold at the French capital. However, they began their group stage journey with a shocking 2-1 loss at the hands of Morocco. But, Nicholas Otamendi and Co composed themselves to qualify for the next stage with 2 straight wins and finishing second on their group.

But Argentina were unable to go past their roadblock in the quarterfinals where they faced France. Thierry Henry’s side grabbed the only goal in the 5th minute of the game to seal the deal for the hosts. It is safe to say that Argentina got plenty of chances in making a comeback.

The two sides have been arch rivals. After the antics in the FIFA World Cup 2022 finals, a spark was all that was needed to ignite the fire. And much so after the final whistle, both the sides clashed against each other as a brawl ensued on the pitch.
