Indian boxers brace for tough fight at 2024 Paris Olympics

The Indian boxing contingent comprises Amit Panghal (51kg), Nishant Dev (71kg), Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg).

India’s boxing contingent is gearing up for a challenging campaign at the Paris Olympics. Despite fielding a strong team of six boxers, including two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen and Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain, the road to the podium is fraught with obstacles.

Rocky road to Paris 2024

The Indian boxing team endured a tumultuous qualifying process. Following disappointing results at the Hangzhou Asian Games and the first World qualifying tournament, High Performance Director Bernard Dunne resigned. The team faced further setbacks with the loss of a quota place in the women’s 57kg category due to Parveen Hooda’s suspension.

However, India managed to secure six quota places, with Amit Panghal and Nishant Dev qualifying through their performances at the second World qualifier in Bangkok. Jaismine Lamboria also reclaimed the 57kg berth.

Strong Indian squad for Olympics

The Indian boxing team boasts a talented roster, with a mix of experienced and young fighters. Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain are the headline acts, while Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Amit Panghal, and Nishant Dev are also capable of causing upsets.

However, the competition at the Olympics is fierce. The draw has been unkind to the Indian boxers, with most of them placed in tough groups. Nikhat Zareen, for instance, faces a challenging path to the medal rounds, with several world champions and Olympic medalists in her category.

Only Nishant Dev has got a favourable draw among all Indian boxers. The young pugilist has also got a bye in Round of 16.

Indian Boxers face Tough Draw at Paris Olympics

India’s boxing contingent has been handed a challenging draw at the Paris Olympics. While Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain face formidable opponents from the outset, Amit Panghal and Nishant Dev have drawn relatively easier paths.

Two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen has been placed in a tough group, with potential clashes against top boxers including Wu Yu, Chuthamat Raksat, and Ingrit Valencia. Similarly, Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain faces a stern test with opponents like Li Qian and Davina Michel.

In contrast, Amit Panghal and Nishant Dev have been handed more favorable draws. While they will still face stiff competition, their paths to the medal rounds appear less arduous compared to their female counterparts.

The Indian boxing team will need to be at their best to overcome these challenges and secure a podium finish.

The male boxers will be looking to emulate the success of Vijender Singh, who won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Overcoming odds for Indian Boxers

To achieve success at the Paris Olympics, the Indian boxers will need to be at their absolute best. The team has undergone rigorous training and preparation, with the aim of overcoming the challenges posed by their opponents.

While the journey ahead is fraught with difficulties, the Indian boxing team remains determined to make its mark on the world stage. With the right mindset and execution, they can overcome the odds and bring home medals for the country.

The Indian boxing contingent comprises Amit Panghal (51kg), Nishant Dev (71kg), Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg).
