Paris metro not accessible for disabled, sparks concerns ahead of Paralympics

Ahead of the Paris Paralympics which will begin from August 28, the city's metro chief has said that the system was not accessible for the disabled

The metro system in Paris has come under fire for not being disabled friendly ahead of the Paris Paralympics. The head of the regional transport network admitted that the system was impossible for people with disabilities and called for efforts to fix the issue. The Paralympics will commence from August 28 and will go on till September 8.

Paris metro unfriendly for Paralympians

Only 29 out of 300 stations are wheelchair accessible. The head of the regional transport Valerie Pecresse revealed that the city’s metro lines still remain as the weak spot in terms of accessibility. She called for massive efforts to fix the issue. She added that it would take at least 20 years to modernise the metro in terms of accessibility.

The team was originally planned to have 87 athletes, but the final number is 84. This historic team aims to surpass the medal count of previous Paralympics, where India won 4 medals in Rio and 19 in Tokyo.
