The 2022 world champion and Rio 2016 10,000m bronze medallist left his competitors in the dust, crossing the finish line with a comfortable lead and setting a new Olympic record.

In a race filled with drama and unexpected turns, Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia emerged as the new Olympic marathon champion, winning the men’s marathon in Paris with a record-breaking time of 2:06:26. Tola, who entered the marathon just two weeks ago as a last-minute replacement for his injured teammate Sisay Lemma, displayed exceptional endurance and skill on a challenging course filled with steep climbs and tricky downhills.

The 2022 world champion and Rio 2016 10,000m bronze medallist left his competitors in the dust, crossing the finish line with a comfortable lead and setting a new Olympic record. His victory is all the more impressive given the circumstances of his entry into the race, making him a well-deserved Olympic gold medallist.

Silver and Bronze for Bashir Abdi and Benson Kipruto

Following Tola, Bashir Abdi of Belgium secured the silver medal with a time of 2:06:47. Abdi, who finished third in the marathon at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the 2022 World Championships, once again proved his consistency at the highest level of competition.

Kenya’s Benson Kipruto claimed the bronze in his Olympic debut, finishing with a time of 2:07:00. Kipruto’s strong performance adds to Kenya’s rich history in marathon running, although the absence of their legendary runner Eliud Kipchoge was keenly felt in the race.

Eliud Kipchoge withdraws, shocks World

In a surprising turn of events, Eliud Kipchoge, the two-time Olympic champion and world record holder, withdrew from the race at the 30km mark. Kipchoge, who was considered the favourite to win, was last seen allowing Mongolia’s Ser-Od Bat-Ochir to pass him before withdrawing from the race, acknowledging the crowd’s cheers as he stepped off the course.

Kipchoge’s withdrawal marks a significant moment in marathon history, as the legendary runner had dominated the sport for nearly a decade. While the exact reason for his withdrawal remains unclear, Kipchoge’s absence opened the door for a new generation of marathon runners to claim the Olympic spotlight.

Tamirat Tola’s remarkable rise

Tamirat Tola’s victory in Paris is the culmination of years of hard work and perseverance. A seasoned long-distance runner, Tola had already made a name for himself with his bronze medal in the 10,000m at the Rio 2016 Olympics and his gold medal at the 2022 World Championships. However, his transition to the marathon and subsequent victory in Paris marks a new chapter in his career.

Despite the last-minute nature of his entry into the race, Tola remained focused and executed his race plan to perfection. His ability to adapt to the conditions and maintain a relentless pace throughout the marathon is a testament to his mental and physical strength.

New Era in Marathon Running

Tamirat Tola’s triumph in the men’s marathon at the Paris Olympics signals the beginning of a new era in marathon running. With Eliud Kipchoge’s unexpected withdrawal, the race showcased the depth of talent in the field, as athletes like Tola, Abdi, and Kipruto rose to the occasion. Tola’s victory, marked by determination and resilience, will be remembered as one of the standout moments of the Paris Olympics, inspiring a new generation of long-distance runners.
