Pakistan athletes get Indian visas, depart for Chennai to compete in SAAF Jr C’ships

As the Pakistani athletes prepare for their events in Chennai, they are undoubtedly focused on delivering strong performances and showcasing their talents on an international stage.

In a significant development for sports diplomacy in South Asia, the 12-member Pakistan junior athletics team has successfully obtained Indian visas and departed for Chennai. They are set to participate in the South Asian Athletics Federation (SAAF) Junior Championships, which will take place from September 11th to 13th, 2024. The team’s departure was confirmed after earlier concerns about visa delays had created uncertainty over their participation.

Visa Hurdles Cleared Just in Time

The athletes and their accompanying officials faced initial delays in acquiring visas, but those concerns were resolved over the weekend. An official from the Pakistani athletics contingent confirmed that the Indian High Commission issued the required visas on Saturday, allowing the team to travel on Monday.

“The contingent has left via the Wagah border from where they will go to Amritsar and fly to Chennai,” said the official, confirming the route taken by the team to reach their destination.

Warm Welcome from India’s Athletic Community

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) took to social media to announce the arrival of the Pakistani athletes, posting a photograph of the team crossing the Wagah border. The AFI, responsible for hosting the SAAF Junior Championships, welcomed the team with open arms, underscoring the spirit of sportsmanship that transcends political divides.

“Pakistan junior athletics team and officials arrived today at Wagah border in Amritsar. The athletes will compete at the SAAF Junior Championship in Chennai starting September 11,” the AFI posted on X.

Sports Diplomacy in Action

The participation of Pakistan’s junior athletics team in this prestigious event highlights the role of sports as a unifying force in South Asia. Despite ongoing political tensions, platforms like the SAAF Junior Championships offer young athletes the opportunity to not only compete but also foster goodwill and camaraderie across borders.

As the Pakistani athletes prepare for their events in Chennai, they are undoubtedly focused on delivering strong performances and showcasing their talents on an international stage. The SAAF Junior Championships promises to be an exciting event, with emerging talents from across South Asia competing for glory.
