Disadvantage Arshad Nadeem? Pakistan’s javelin star escapes Neeraj Chopra before Paris Olympics

The two arch-rivals, Arshad and Neeraj, have only faced each other in a competition twice, with Chopra emerging victorious on both occasions.

Pakistan’s star javelin player, Arshad Nadeem, sets his sights on the Paris Diamond League starting July 7th. This competition serves as a crucial pre-Olympics test, but the competition is making a void for him—the absence of his biggest rival, India’s Neeraj Chopra.

Nadeem’s journey to Paris comes after a struggle with injury. A recent calf muscle strain forced him to miss an event in Finland. Now, fully recovered, he seeks to take first place with his fitness and great form before the Paris Olympics.

No Neeraj Chopra in the Diamond League

The absence of Neeraj Chopra leaves a void. Chopra himself confirmed his absence from the Paris Diamond League. It not only deprives fans of the fierce Indo-Pak rivalry but also makes it difficult for Arshad to gain confidence.

Missed opportunity for Arshad

For Arshad, this is a missed opportunity. Competing against Chopra would have been a significant confidence boost heading into the Olympics for Arshad. His past victories, like the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, came in Chopra’s absence.

There were only two instances where Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem competed together. In the Tokyo Olympics, Neeraj Chora clinched the gold with an 87.58-metre throw, leaving Arshad behind by 2.96 metres. Arshad finished in fifth place.

The second instance came at the 2023 World Championships. It highlighted the small gap: Chopra’s gold medal throw (88.17 m) left Nadeem with a silver (87.82 m).

The mental hurdle continues for Nadeem

Even a Diamond League victory for Nadeem might not translate to complete confidence for the Olympics. Knowing that Neeraj will be present in Paris remains a mental hurdle for him.

This scenario underscores the importance of high-level competition for athletes. Facing their strongest competitors allows them to assess their progress, identify areas for improvement, and build mental resilience.

While the Paris Diamond League will undoubtedly be a valuable test for Nadeem, the absence of Chopra leaves a sense of unfinished business for him.
