At Delhi’s iconic Chhatrasal Stadium, a heartwarming scene unfolded as Olympic bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat was welcomed back after his historic achievement at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Among those celebrating his success was senior wrestler Ravi Dahiya, who secured a silver medal in the same 57kg category at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
“It is great, to be honest. We have won two back-to-back medals in the same category. This shows the depth we have in wrestling in our country,” Ravi shared during the felicitation event to The Bridge.
As Aman prepared for his Olympic debut, he sought advice from Ravi, who offered him some simple yet impactful words. “I told him to focus on his style of wrestling. We can’t control what other wrestlers do, so it’s essential to concentrate on our own strengths and how we can improve,” Ravi explained.
Legacy of Wrestling Excellence
The Chhatrasal Stadium has been a breeding ground for numerous Indian wrestling champions, including Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia, Yogeshwar Dutt, and Sushil Kumar. Ravi, who also hones his skills at this legendary venue, expressed pride in the ongoing legacy. “This stadium has a great legacy of wrestlers. Along with Aman, we have many young wrestlers who practice here, and I am sure the legacy will only grow stronger,” he remarked.
Ravi Dahiya journey of resilience
Ravi Dahiya’s journey after the Tokyo Olympics has been a mix of triumphs and challenges. Despite suffering a knee injury during the Olympics, which he carried into the final rounds, he went on to win a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. However, his performance at the 2022 World Championships was less successful, with an early exit in the pre-quarterfinals.
Injuries have further complicated his return to the mat, affecting his form during the Asian Games and Olympic qualifiers trials, where he struggled to find his rhythm.
Focused on Strong Comeback
Despite these setbacks, Ravi remains determined to make a strong comeback. “I will be back soon. My surgery was successful, and I am on my way to recovery. You will see me on the mat very soon,” Ravi Dahiya assured his supporters.
With Aman now holding the top spot in the 57kg category, there has been speculation about whether Ravi might move up to the 65kg category. However, Ravi is clear about his immediate plans. “I will continue to wrestle in the 57kg category at the moment, and if needed, I might move to a heavier category like 65kg. But for now, I am focused on my return,” he concluded.
As Ravi Dahiya eyes a return to the wrestling arena, his commitment to the 57kg category and his resilient spirit are evident. Wrestling fans across the country eagerly await his comeback, confident that he will continue to build on his impressive legacy.
