Numero Uno Novak Djokovic set to return to Indian Wells after four-year hiatus

Djokovic was not allowed to participate because of his s unvaccinated status against COVID-19, as per U.S. regulations for noncitizen visitors

Novak Djokovic is making a long-awaited comeback to the BNP Paribas Open after a five-year hiatus, aiming to secure an unprecedented sixth title in the Southern California desert. The world’s top-ranked male player last graced the courts of Indian Wells in 2019, making an early exit in the third round.

His absence in the past four years was due to his unvaccinated status against COVID-19, as per U.S. regulations for noncitizen visitors until last spring.

Djokovic’s return adds to the excitement of the tournament, where he previously claimed titles in 2008, 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2016. Joining him is three-time winner Rafael Nadal, marking his comeback after missing last year’s event due to injury. The combined ATP and WTA tour event, scheduled from March 3 to 17, promises a thrilling spectacle.

The presence of top-ranked woman Iga Swiatek, defending champions Carlos Alcaraz and Elena Rybakina, and Australian Open winners Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka further elevates the competition.
