During the Opening Week of the 2024 Australian Open (14-28 January), Novak Djokovic hosted an event on Rod Laver Arena called “Novak Djokovic and Friends.” The 24-time Grand Slam champion explored various sports during this engaging occasion.
Djokovic showcased his versatility by trying out basketball and demonstrating adeptness in various disciplines. He took on challenges, including a flexibility challenge against international gymnast Georgia Godwin and friendly competitions against Aussie cricket legend Steve Smith in both cricket and tennis. However, wheelchair tennis presented a unique challenge for Djokovic.
Assisted by Stefanos Tsitsipas and Aryna Sabalenka, who joined the lineup, Djokovic was wheeled into position to face a return from Heath Davidson. Despite his skills, the world number one Djokovic faced difficulties, highlighting the remarkable nature of wheelchair tennis.
Prepared to defend his title at the Australian Open, Djokovic is getting ready for his first match against either a qualifier or a lucky loser. Potential challenges in the following rounds include matchups with Australian contenders Marc Polmans or Alexei Popyrin. Djokovic, coming off three major victories in the previous season, enters the tournament with an impressive 28-match winning streak at the season’s inaugural major and holds a total of 24 major titles.
