After showing massive interest in bidding for hosting the 2036 Olympics, India are now also set to bid for hosting the 2029 World Athletics Championships. India, who were about to bid for hosting the 2023 World Athletics Championships, have now dropped that plan and is showing massive interest to bat 2029 hosting rights.
“Yes, we are interested in bidding for the 2029 World Athletics Championships,” AFI senior Vice President Anju Bobby George told PTI, on the sidelines of the AFI Annual General Body meeting.
“India has expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics and 2030 Youth Olympics. So, it will be very good if we can host the 2029 World Athletics Championships,” said the legendary long jumper.
There is no official word yet on the announcement of the deadline for formal bidding for the 2029 World Athletics Championships. The World Athletics body formally gave bidding time for hosting the 2027 showpiece event, but not for the 2029 event yet. The last time the World Athletics event was held in Budapest, Hungary. The next edition’s global event will be held in 2025 in Tokoyo.

Neeraj Chopra eyes glory in 2029 World Athletics Championships in India
Currently, India’s Golden Boy – Neeraj Chopra is the reigning champion in Javelin Throw in the Olympics and World Athletics Championships. The youngster will have a golden chance to win the World Athletics medal yet another time, this time in India. If India successfully bags the hosting right for the World Athletics event in 2029.
Also, AFI has decided in planning to put a strategic plan till 2026 Olympics, as it wants to win five-six medals in the Global events from athletics.
“We want to achieve high performance, produce world beaters and win 5-6 medals in the 2036 Olympics,” AFI Planning Commission chairman Lalit Bhanot said during the AGM.
