No, Vinesh Phogat won’t be getting a silver medal for her exploits in Paris Olympics. The CAS has refused her case following a meeting after the Indian wrestler filed a petition. The Indian wrestler was disqualified from taking part in the 50m Women’s gold match after failing to meet the weight needed for the fight.
Vinesh Phogat was just a 100 gm overweight. After her disqualification, she went on to file a case to get the joint silver medal against the UWW at CAS. While the decision was slated to come a couple of days earlier, but it was eventually delayed till today.
“Vinesh Phogat’s petition has been dismissed. That’s the operative part of the order,” claimed RevSportz Global.
No Silver for Vinesh! IOA expresses disappointment
As things stand, the CAS has dismissed Vinesh Phogat’s claim of grabbing a silver medal at the Paris Olympics. And with massive disappointment, India won’t be getting their second silver medal in the mega tournament. For India, no athlete managed to grab a goal. Only Neeraj Chopra bagged a silver medal while India won 5 bronze medals.
“The IOA firmly believes that the total disqualification of an athlete for such a weight infraction on the second of two days warrants a deeper examination. Our legal representatives had duly brought this out in their submissions before the Sole Arbitrator,” the Indian Olympic Association said in a statement.
