No Indian singles shuttler in top-10 signals at dearth of depth, only Satwik/Chirag world-class

In five categories, only Satwik-Chirag are in the top-10 of BWF rankings; World no. 3 in men's doubles.

On Tuesday, the latest BWF rankings were released, and one must admit, the current scenario looks a bit alarming. No Indian singles shuttler finds themselves in the top-10 rankings as of now, where HS Prannoy has slipped to 17th after the Paris Olympics failure, followed by Lakshya Sen at 18th. Though the latter managed to reach the semis, but his performance on the BWF tour also counts, which, to be honest, wasn’t the best.

In men’s singles, next on the list is Priyanshu Rajawat, who finds himself at 36th spot, while Kidambi Srikanth is languishing at 38th. The larger issue here is that none of the youngsters are coming up..Kiran George is in the 40s for years now, Ayush Shetty isn’t growing, and so isn’t Meiraba Luwang Maisnam.

Similar is the case in women’s singles. PV Sindhu finds herself in 14th position, and then there is no one who until 39th — Aakarshi Kashyap. Malvika Bansod and Anupama Upadhyaya are 41st and 45th, respectively. There are some upcoming names, but they also find their progress stalled. Unnati Hooda has dropped a place to 49. Tasnim Mir is at 69, and Samiya Imad Farooqui has dropped 12 places to 72nd.

Only Satwik/Chirag in Top 3

Despite missing out on a medal narrowly at the Paris Olympics, the pair of Satwik/Chirag continues to be world-class. They jumped two spots to be World No. 3. The next best Indian team on the list is Krishna Prasad Garaga and Sai Pratheek at 38. With Ashwini Ponnappa retiring, Tanisha Crasto has moved back to mixed doubles. So in women’s doubles Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand are the best-placed team at 26.
