NFTs have become a popular digital property and the FINA wants to cash in on that popularity. The 19th FINA World Championships is underway in Budapest and will end on July 3. The Aquatics world governing body partnered with Krizbo, a digital artist from Budapest to design an illustration of every individual world record moment that will be produced and presented to the athlete. In addition to the personalised NFT, the athlete will also be awarded a prize money bonus of US$50,000.
According to FINA, the partnership with Krizbo is in line with its effort to use digital technologies to connect and engage with young talent and fans across the world. Every athlete who breaks a world record in Budapest will be invited to a special award function on 25 June 2022. They will receive their NFT trophies at the Duna Arena.
Delighted with the new strategy, the FINA President said that this strategy is in line with the recommendation received from FINA Reform Committee.

Husain Al-Musallam, FINA President said, “Breaking a world record is a very special moment in any athlete’s career. We are very excited to use state-of-the-art digital technology to create a portable and permanent way of capturing athlete achievements in the pool during the 19th FINA World Championships in a way that is fully in line with the FINA Reform Committee’s recommendations on digital transformation. We are delighted to be one of the first International Federations to pioneer this concept.”
The 19th FINA World Championships include four events, namely diving, water polo, swimming and artistic aquatics events. There are at-the-minimum 22 members who are offering complete coverage of the event, it has been confirmed by the European Broadcasting Union.
Andreas Aristodemou, Head of Eurovision Sport (summer sports rights) said, “The Fina World Championships is an event EBU has supported since its inception, and Budapest 2022 extends this proud record. We are delighted that our members supported this acquisition and are bringing their unparalleled coverage and reach to another edition of Fina’s flagship event.”
