Neeraj Chopra looks to better silver effort in Paavo Nurmi Games 2023

The 25-year-old was last seen in action at the Doha Diamond League 2023. He began his season this year with the tournament. The youngster went on to clinch Gold medal by throwing a distance of 88.67m.

Before the Paavo Nurmi Games, he will take part in the Fanny Blankers-Koen Games at Hengelo, the Netherlands on June 4.

What is Paavo Nurmi Games?

Paavo Nurmi Games is one of the biggest Track and Field tournaments outside the Diamond League. It is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour. It has been held every year since 1957. The tournament is named after Paavo Nurmi, who is a Finnish Long Distance runner. He was famously called the Flying Finn.

In the last year’s edition, Chopra bagged the silver medal in the tournament. He registered a throw of 89.30m which was his personal best. He also set a new National record with the effort. This year, the Indian is aiming to better his performance and also is eyeing to breach the 90m mark.

Who will be Neeraj Chopra’s opponents in Paavo Nurmi Games 2023?

German star Johannes Vetter, who famously failed to even qualify for the final round of the Tokyo Olympic Games, will renew his rivalry with Chopra in nearly two years. He is set to return to action since May 2022.

Besides Vetter, Chopra will also compete against Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch, Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, European champion Julian Weber of Germany and European Championships bronze medallist Lassi Etelatolo of Finland in the event..

After the Paavo Nurmi Games, Neeraj Chopra will head to Stickholm for the Diamond League. In a busy calendar, he also has the World Championships and the Asian Games later this year.
