Neeraj Chopra, the silver medallist at the Paris Olympics, has officially secured his spot in the Diamond League final, set to be held in Brussels on 13 and 14 September. The 26-year-old javelin thrower finished among the top six competitors, earning him a place in the prestigious event.

Top six javelin throwers confirmed for Diamond League finale

The automatic qualifiers for the Diamond League final in the javelin event include an impressive line-up. Alongside Neeraj Chopra, the top six includes Paris Olympics bronze medallist Anderson Peters, Julian Weber, Jakub Vadlejch, Andrian Mardare, and Roderick Genki Dean.

Neeraj Chopra, who threw a remarkable 89.49m at the Lausanne leg of the competition, is joint third in the overall Diamond League standings with 15 points, alongside Germany’s Julian Weber. Grenada’s Anderson Peters leads the rankings with 21 points, following his best throw of 90.61m at Lausanne. Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch is in second place with 16 points.

This season has been another standout for Neeraj Chopra, whose 89.49m throw in Lausanne was marginally better than his personal best at the Paris Olympics (89.45m). His performance in Lausanne earned him a second-place finish, further boosting his chances in the Diamond League.

After the Paris Olympics, Neeraj Chopra had hinted that he might need surgery to address a recurring adductor muscle issue. While he hasn’t returned to India since the Olympics, travelling directly to Switzerland for competition, Chopra is weighing his options regarding the remainder of the season. He mentioned the possibility of competing in “maybe one or two more events,” with Brussels being a strong contender for his final appearance of the year.

Chopra emphasised that his top priority is to focus on his health. “The first goal is to see the doctor and make my groin 100 per cent fit,” he stated. He also expressed his desire to continue refining his technique and push for even greater throws in the coming year.
