Navdeep Singh: Once ridiculed for height, ‘short-tempered’ para-athlete makes world take notice

Navdeep Singh silenced those who once ridiculed him for his height by meeting the Prime Minister of India.

The world is taking notice of javelin thrower Navdeep Singh, who clinched a gold medal at the recently concluded Paris Paralympics. While the world at first noticed only height and bad temper during his event, there is more than meets the eye. The Delhi boy comes from a family of sportspersons, where his father was a national-level wrestler, and athletics was his first love.

Navdeep’s journey was far from easy, as he often faced mockery and ridicule due to his height. However, this never dampened his spirits, and he remained determined, relentlessly pursuing his passion for sports.

“Navdeep would lock himself in a room and would not get out of the house for days. All the neighbourhood kids teased him about his height and would call him Bauna,” Mandeep Sheoran, Navdeep’s elder brother, said as per The Indian Express.

Navdeep Singh takes inspiration from his father

The 23-year-old was inspired by his father who was a national-level wrestler. He was born in Harayan with a short statue.

Navdeep is employed as an Inspector in the Income Tax Department in Bengaluru, showcasing his dedication to both his work and sports.

Navdeep began his sports career in athletics before specializing in javelin throw. He started receiving professional coaching in 2017, the same year he made his international debut at the Asian Youth Para Games, where he clinched the gold medal in javelin throw.

Navdeep was in second spot in the paralympics with his personal best of 47.32, but after Iran’s Sadegh Beit Sayah disqualification, he was awarded top spot in the podium.
