Nadal, who made a comeback from his foot injury this year is yet to face a defeat this year. The Spaniard won the Melbourne Open to start the year on a positive note. In the Australian Open, he had a terrific run and entered the final. In the summit clash, he played Daniil Medvedev and outlasted him in a five-setter to complete a career double Grand Slam. He will look to continue his form in the Mexican Open.
Nadal was originally set to face Reilly Opelka in the first round, but he withdrew at the last minute and Kudla, who lost the last round of the qualifiers qualified for the main draw as a lucky loser. The American, who is ranked 100th in the world, is entering the tournament after facing two first round defeats in the Delray Beach Open and the Dallas Open. In the Australian Open too, he lost to Karen Kachanov in the first round. The 29-year-old is on a four-match losing streak and is set to face one of world’s best players.
