Moselle Open LIVE: Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka has clinched his first victory since the Queen’s Club Championships in June this year as he defeated Joao Sousa in straight sets in the first round at Moselle Open on Wednesday. After winning the first set via a tie-breaker, Wawrinka asserted his dominance in the second set as he clinched a comfortable 7-6, 6-2 victory. Stan Wawrinka entered the tournament as the qualifier. Ever since he lost to Tommy Paul in the second round at the Queen’s Club Championships, Wawrinka faced four successive first round exits at the Wimbledon, Swedish Open, Canadian Open and Cincinnati Masters. In the US Open, he bowed out from the first round after suffering a knee injury. He entered Moselle Open as a qualifier and defeated Laslo Djere and Zsombor Piros in the first two rounds in qualifiers to make it to the main draw.
Having been winless in his last six matches, he was hoping to carry forward his form from the qualifiers into the main draw and began the contest against Joao Sousa. Both the players started the contest well and gave a tough fight holding their respective service games. As nothing could separate both the players, the set eventually went into the tie-breaker. Wawrinka however dominated in the tie-breaker by conceding just a solitary point to his opponent (7-1) as he clinched the first set.
In the second set, both the players won their first two service games and from then on, Wawrinka asserted his dominance as he first broke Sousa in the fifth game to take 3-2 lead. The Portugese tried hard to get a break immediately in the next game and both the players were involved in a long battle on deuce. However Wawrinka had the last laugh as he managed to hold on to his serve. The Swiss then broke Sousa yet again in the very next game and won the match by holding on to his serve.
