Mirabai’s management has decided to give the champion weightlifter some much-needed rest before the Olympic qualification rounds. It all started with the recent World Championships in Colombia’s capital, Bogota.
Chanu is one of India’s top medal prospects for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Mirabai won silver in the women’s 49 kg category at the Worlds, despite a sprained left wrist, ahead of China’s Tokyo Olympics champion Hou Zhihui.

What’s next for Chanu?
After a successful outing in Bogota, Mirabai and coach Sharma have returned to their training base at NIS Patiala.
Mirabai has decided to postpone her competition until May of next year, when the Asian weightlifting championships will be held in Jinju-si, South Korea, from May 3 to 13.
During this time, she will remain at NIS to treat her weak shoulder and aching back. To begin, Mirabai will refrain from lifting heavy weights for one month, with the exception of her regular gym sessions.
Chanu will instead focus on strengthening her shoulders through exercises suggested by the coach.
Once the shoulder part is resolved, the focus will then shift to resolving the chronic back pain, which has been troubling her since her gold-winning effort at the Gold Coast CWG in 2018.
The pain in her left wrist, has troubled Mirabai during her Worlds campaign.
She injured her wrist during one of her training sessions in NIS in September, shortly after returning from Birmingham with her second CWG gold medal. She had competed despite an injury to win her first National Games gold medal in Gujarat, but had missed the Asian Championships in Bahrain in October.
Mirabai’s next major challenge will be the Asian Games, which will be held in Hangzhou from September 23 to October 8, 2023.
