- World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz started his campaign in 2023 at the Argentina Open. He missed the Australian Open at the start of the year due to a leg injury.
- He had a terrific start to the season as he won the Argentina Open title straightaway after his return from the injury.
- The Spaniard also subsequently made his way into the final of the Rio Open and was aiming to lift his second successive title of the year.
- However he only managed to finish as runner-up as he went down against Cameron Norrie in the final by losing in three sets.
- Alcaraz also suffered a leg injury in the tourament and it remains to be seen whether it will have an impact on his participation in the tournament.
- Mackenzie McDonald made headlines earlier this year after defeating Rafael Nadal in the second round of the Australian Open.
- The American stunned the defending champion with a 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 win. However he bowed out of the tournament from the third round.
- McDonald then played in the Dallas Open and couldn’t go past the second round.
- He played at the Delray Open Beach and went all thye way to the semifinals where he suffered a straight set win against compatriot and top seed Taylor Fritz.
Alcaraz vs McDonald LIVE: Both the players have met twice so far in the ATP Tour. In both their previous meetings, Alcaraz emerged as the winner. The World No.2 yet again enters as the favourite in the upcomomg contest. However his fitness remains a concern following his defeat in the Rio Open final.
