Medvedev, who returned to the Geneva Open this year after undergoing a hernia surgery wasn’t at his best of forms in the French Open as he faced a shocking fourth round exit. With a ban on the Russian players in Wimbledon, he will miss out the Grand Slam event this year. However he began the Grass court season on a positive note by defeating Simon.
Medvedev started the proceedings slowly as he trailed the first set 3-5. Simon was looking in a fine touch and was showing signs of extending his unbeaten record over the World No.2. However, Medvedev made a good comeback as he broke Simon and then held on to his serve to level the score 5-5. He continued to break Simon for one more time and won the first set 7-5.
In the second set, Medvedev got an early break over Simon to lead 2-1. It was enpugh for the Russian to win the set 6-4 and advance to the quarterfinals.
