After his heart-breaking loss in the 2022 Australian Open finals to Rafael Nadal last month, Medvedev, the top seed is on course to become the World No.1 if he wins the title at Mexico. Against Pablo Andujar in the first round, he dominated right from the start to finish, winning the tie dropping just three games. He will look to continue his dominance throughout the tournament.
Meanwhile, Nishioka had a poor start to the year as he had won just one match across four tournament this year. He had to play the qualifiers to qualify for the main round here. In the first round, he faced Feliciano Lopez. After losing the first set he came back and dropped just four games in the next two sets to clinch a terrific victory. In the second round, he once again lost the first set but clinched an upset victory over Taylor Fritz 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. The win was the first time he has won two consecutive matches in any main draw this year. He will be up against one of world’s best players at the moment.
Medvedev vs Nishioka– Head-to-Head: Both the players will be facing each other in a main draw for the first time. However they have met once in the qualification round at the 2018 Cincinnati Masters, where Medvedev clinched a comfortable victory. Medvedev is once again expected to sail past the Japanese opponent in straight sets.
