HS Prannoy vs Liew Daren
India’s HS Prannoy faced stiff resistance before prevailing against local hero Daren Liew as the Indian shuttler progressed to the men’s singles second round of the Malaysia Open on Tuesday.
A former top-10 player, Prannoy, who had reached the semifinals of Indonesia Open Super 1000 earlier this month, emerged a 21-14 17-21 21-18 winner in 62 minutes.
The 29-year-old from Kerala, ranked 21st currently, will face fourth seeded Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei next at the Super 750 badminton tournament.
Prannoy’s win brought some cheers to the Indian camp after B Sai Praneeth and Sameer Verma made early exits.

Sai Praneeth suffered yet another first round exit this year as he went down against World No.6 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting 15-21, 21-19, 9-21. Ginting began the match on a strong note as he lef right from the front and entered the interval with a 11-8 lead. After the break Praneeth started committing way too many errors to give momentunm to his opponent, who closed put the set 21-15.
In the second game, Praneeth fought back well but still trailed the set 7-11 at interval. He however continued his fightback to level the scores 12-12 and from then on took the lead. A close fight ensued and he prevailed 21-19 to take the match into the decider.
In the third game, Praneeth couldn’t even come close to matching Ginting as the Indonesian dominated the set and won it 21-9.

Sameer Verma went down in a tough fight against Indonesia’ Jonatan Christie as he lost the contest 14-21, 21-13, 7-21. Verma started the match on the backfoot as the Indonesian started attacking straighaway and entered the break witha 11-4 advantage. He continued his good show to win the first set 21-14.
In the second set, Sameer Verma changed the script as he strated dominating right from the start and this time he entered the interval with a 11-4 lead. He continued attacking and also gained points from the errors committed by Christie as he took the game into the decider by winning the second game 21-13.
In the third game, once again the Indonesian was back on top as he went into the interval with a 11-4 lead. He quickly began to assert his domination as he raced to a 18-7 lead and won the set 21-17 to defeat Sameer Verma
Men’s Doubles
In the men’s doubles, India’s seventh seed Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the second round as they beat Malaysia’s Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun in the opening round.
Women’s Doubles
In doubles, the women’s pairing of Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy also bowed out of the tournament after losing 15-21 11-21 to Japanese duo of Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida, seeded sixth. Haritha Harinarayanan and Ashna Roy too faced straight set defeat against Jeong Na-eun and Kim Hye-jeong.
Mixed Doubles
Venkat Gaurav Prasad and Jihi Dewangan bowed out from the first round after facing straight set defeat against South Korea’s Kim Won-ho and Jeong Na-eun.
