After an exciting Day 1 of the Hockey India League (HIL) 2024 auction, the event has resumed for Day 2, with several big names set to go under the hammer. The HIL is poised to be a major event in India’s hockey scene, returning after a seven-year hiatus. Scheduled to begin in late December and run through February, the tournament promises more excitement than ever. Originally launched in 2013 with a double round-robin format, the revived league will, for the first time, feature women’s games alongside men’s. With eight men’s teams and six women’s teams, the competition is set to be fierce.
Ahead of the on-field action, the auction is already generating buzz, with several high-profile players expected to go under the hammer. The auction for male players is scheduled for October 13 and 14, while the women’s auction will take place on October 15. This year, the HIL auction will feature over 1,000 athletes, both domestic and international. Specifically, the pool includes over 400 domestic men’s players, more than 150 overseas men’s players, over 250 domestic women’s players, and over 70 overseas women’s players. Each team is required to build a squad of 24 players, which must consist of 16 domestic players (including four mandatory junior players) and eight overseas players.
