MC Mary Kom, the legendary boxer, has resigned as Chef-de-Mission of India’s Paris Olympics team, citing personal concerns. The six-time World Champion and bronze medalist at the 2012 London Olympics was meant to be accompanied by luger Shiva Keshavan, who had been designated deputy chef de mission.
According to PTI, Mary Kom stated in her letter to PT Usha that she was thankful to the IOA for putting its trust in her for her role as chef de mission for Paris 2024, but that she was “left with no choice”.
“I consider it an honour to serve my country in every way possible, and I was mentally prepared for it. However, I regret that I will not be able to uphold the prestigious responsibility and would like to resign, owing to personal reasons.,” said Mary Kom after announcing her decision.
“It is embarrassing to retreat from a commitment, which I seldom do, but I am left with no choice. I am there to cheer on my country and the athletes competing in this Olympic Games, with great expectations,” her letter stated.
What is the role of chef-de-mission?
A Chef de Mission is the head of a sports delegation at an international event. It is their ultimate responsibility for the welfare of his or her team, the most important arm being the athletes. During the Games, they stay informed and keep everyone updated. They also handle things like choosing flag-bearers and managing transportation.
