Max Verstappen won the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship in an intense year pipping 7-time world champions Lewis Hamilton in a controversial manner. But he was the breakout star of 2021 as he ended Mercedes and Hamilton’s dominance.

After a season-long duel with Lewis Hamilton, Verstappen scripted a Hollywood ending. He overtook his arch-rival and reigning champion at turn five on the final lap in Abu Dhabi GP. It was after a safety car had allowed him to close what had appeared to be an insurmountable gap between them.

“It was a very crazy and hectic year, and I was very happy to come out on top. It was my dream come true, what I worked for from a very young age. There’s a whole team behind me, so many people working on basically two cars to give me that opportunity to win the Championship and this Award,” Max Verstappen said.

Elaine Thompson-Herah Sportswoman of the year: Jamaican sprint queen Elaine Thompson-Herah was voted the Sportswoman of the year in a virtual ceremony in Sevilla. She became the first woman to complete the double-double – a successful defence of both the 100m and 200m Olympic titles.

In Tokyo, she broke new ground, setting an Olympic record in the 100m final. Then she added a third gold, in the 4 x 100m relay, becoming the third sprinter in history to complete that treble.

“I have watched that race [the 100m final] about a thousand times and I am very, very proud, but I cannot dwell on the past. It’s very special, but it’s a memory. I told myself I want to be the greatest female sprinter, so I am going to focus on what the future holds,” Elaine Thompson-Herah said.

Emma Raducanu, World Breakthrough of the Year Award: While it was disappointing for Indian fans as Neeraj Chopra didn’t get the World Breakthrough of the Year award, the world will be pretty happy with Emma Raducanu. The tennis princess became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam when she bagged the US Open crown last year.

Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian track & field athlete to win an Olympic gold medal. The javelin thrower stunned the favourites with a throw of 87.58m. He was nominated alongside Daniil Medvedev (tennis), Ariarne Titmus (swimmer), Pedri (football) Yulimar Rojas (athletics) besides Raducanu.
