Know PR Sreejesh’s Journey: Indian Hockey legend who ended career with Olympic bronze

The bronze medal at the Paris Olympics serves as a fitting conclusion to a career that has been nothing short of legendary. PR Sreejesh will forever be remembered as the ‘custodian of dreams’—a true icon of Indian hockey.

As Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh bid farewell to his illustrious 18-year-long hockey career after securing a bronze medal for India at the Paris Olympics, we take a look back at the journey of this iconic custodian, who has left an indelible mark on Indian hockey.

Early Life and Beginnings of PR Sreejesh

Born on 8 May 1988 in Kizhakkambalam, a small village in Kerala’s Ernakulam district, PR Sreejesh came from humble beginnings. His parents, P. V. Raveendran and Usha, were farmers, and young PR Sreejesh initially trained as a sprinter before exploring long jump and volleyball. His sporting journey took a decisive turn when, at the age of 12, he joined the GV Raja Sports School in Thiruvananthapuram. It was here that his coach suggested he try goalkeeping—a suggestion that would change the course of his life.

Under the guidance of hockey coach Jayakumar, Sreejesh honed his skills as a goalkeeper. His talent was quickly recognized, and he soon found himself playing at the prestigious Nehru Cup. Sreejesh continued his education alongside his sports career, graduating in History from Sree Narayana College in Kollam, Kerala.

Icon is Made: Professional Career Highlights

PR Sreejesh’s rise in the world of hockey was swift. In 2004, he made it to the Indian Junior national team, debuting against Australia in Perth. Just two years later, he was selected for the senior national team, making his debut at the South Asian Games in Colombo. His performance at the 2008 Junior Asia Cup, where India emerged victorious, earned him the ‘Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament’ award—a sign of the greatness to come.

One of his most memorable performances came at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, where he played a pivotal role in India’s gold medal win by saving two penalty strokes in the final against Pakistan. His leadership qualities were soon recognized, and on 13 July 2016, Sreejesh was appointed captain of the Indian hockey team, leading them to the quarterfinals at the Rio Olympics.

However, it was at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 that Sreejesh truly cemented his legacy. On 5 August, he played a crucial role in India’s victory over Germany, securing a bronze medal for the country—the first Olympic hockey medal for India in 41 years.

Kerala’s Icon: PR Sreejesh

PR Sreejesh’s journey to becoming an icon in his home state of Kerala was gradual. Initially, he acknowledged that it was challenging for the state to warm up to a goalkeeper—a position that often remains in the shadows unless something goes wrong. “It’s difficult to love a goalkeeper. He is invisible and only in the limelight when he makes a blunder,” Sreejesh once remarked.

Despite this, Sreejesh’s humility and genuine character won over the hearts of many. At a time when Kerala was in need of a sports hero, following in the footsteps of legends like IM Vijayan and Anju Bobby George, Sreejesh emerged as a figure worthy of admiration. His unassuming nature, grounded personality, and lack of any scandal or controversy made him a relatable and beloved figure in the state.

PR Sreejesh’s career is decorated with numerous accolades, reflecting his contribution to Indian hockey. He was instrumental in India’s bronze medal win at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and played a key role in securing gold at the 2022 Asian Games in China. He also won a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in England and another gold at the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy.
