The prestigious 2024 Senior National Wrestling Championship is set to unfold in Bengaluru, hosted by the Karnataka Wrestling Association from December 6th to 8th at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium. This highly anticipated event will see India’s elite wrestlers compete, including Olympic Bronze Medalist Aman Sehrawat, U-20 World Wrestling Champion Antim Panghal, along with Sujeet, Deepak Punia, Reetika Hooda, Sonam, Radhika, Manisha, Bipasha, Priya, Udit, Chirag, Sunil Kumar, Narinder Cheema, and more.
For the first time, this national championship will take place in Karnataka, a state with a rich wrestling tradition. The event marks a resurgence of the sport in the region, which has historically attracted enthusiastic audiences through traditional and local competitions. The championship aims to rejuvenate this legacy, inspiring young athletes toward the sport.
WFI Sanctions National Wrestling Championship
Sanctioned by the Wrestling Federation of India, the championship will gather over 1,000 participants and officials from 25 affiliated state units, including the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) and Services Sports Promotion Board (SSPB). Competitions will feature Free Style, Greco-Roman Style, and Women’s Wrestling disciplines.
Sanjay Singh, President of the Wrestling Federation of India, expressed his enthusiasm: “Bringing the Senior National Wrestling Championship to Karnataka is a source of pride. We’re excited to collaborate with the Karnataka Wrestling Association to ensure this event’s success, showcasing India’s top wrestling talents.”
Bellippady Gunaranjan Shetty, President of the Karnataka Wrestling Association and Joint Secretary of the Wrestling Federation of India, highlighted, “Hosting the 2024 Senior National Wrestling Championship is both an honor and a privilege for Karnataka. This event not only celebrates the exceptional skills of wrestlers nationwide but also highlights Karnataka’s emerging status as a sports hub.”
He added, “We are committed to providing a world-class arena that celebrates current talent and nurtures future Olympians. We anticipate a championship filled with remarkable performances, sportsmanship, and national pride.”
Participation is open to all affiliated units of the Wrestling Federation of India, each eligible to send up to ten wrestlers and three coaches per discipline. The competition, adhering to WFI and UWW rules, will be conducted on three approved mats across various weight categories: Free Style (57 kg to 125 kg), Greco Roman (55 kg to 130 kg), and Women’s Wrestling (50 kg to 76 kg).
State units are required to submit their list of competitors by November 25th. Matches will be available for live streaming on KWA social media platforms.
