Justice delayed, but not denied: Kamila Valieva banned, Beijing gold revoked

Kamila Valieva, had gained global fame as the first female skater to land a quadruple jump at a Winter Olympics.

After nearly two years of controversy and uncertainty, the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dealt a decisive blow to the saga surrounding Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva and her doping scandal at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Valieva has been slapped with a four-year ban and stripped of her gold medal in the team event, a verdict celebrated by clean athletes and anti-doping authorities worldwide.

The court’s decision brings a long-awaited sense of closure for many, particularly the American athletes who will now witness their silver medal getting upgraded to a gold medal. “A fair result to all athletes has been rendered,” declared WADA director general Olivier Niggli as per Reuters, voicing strong condemnation for Valieva’s entourage.

The case ignited global outrage, not just for the doping itself, but for the questionable role of Kamila Valieva coaches and doctors, who WADA president Witold Banka believes should face criminal charges. “Anyone who dopes children should be in prison,” he stated, advocating for harsher consequences for those who exploit young athletes.

The ruling sends a powerful message of zero tolerance for doping, especially when it involves minors. It vindicates the athletes who compete by the rules and upholds the integrity of fair play in sports. As the US Olympic Committee aptly put it, this is a “significant win” for clean athletes everywhere.

Kamila Valieva, had gained global fame as the first female skater to land a quadruple jump at a Winter Olympics. The teenage sensation tested positive before the Games for banned substances and the same was announced just days after Russia’s gold victory in the team figure skating event.

However, the saga also exposes a larger, disturbing pattern of systemic doping within Russian sports. Despite competing under the ROC banner due to previous doping sanctions, the nation now faces accusations of waging “war” on clean sport with its alleged disregard for anti-doping regulations.
