Both the players, who were part of the Team World Team last month that won the Laver Cup displayed a strong show that was fitting for the final. The two 24-year-olds tried hard in getting a break over the other as the intriguing first set went into the tie-break. At the tie-break, it was Fritz, who showcased greater consistency as he secured the first set.
In the second set too nothing could separate both the players. In the intense clash, Tiafoe didn’t allow his opponent even an inch of an opportunity to take lead and tried his best to take the contets into the deciding third set. However he faltered yet again in the ensuing tie-break as Fritz won the match in straight sets at Tokyo’s Ariake Coliseum.
Fritz is now assured of breaking into the top 10 after beating Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in the semi-finals, also won titles in Eastbourne and Indian Wells this year.
