Janneke Schopman, Indian women’s hockey coach resigns after fall out with Hockey India: Report

Under Janneke Schopman, the Indian women's hockey team had played 74 matches, and had won 34 of them, losing 19.

In yet another setback to Indian women’s hockey, the team’s chief coach from Netherlands, Janneke Schopman has resigned from her position, on Friday. The decision doesn’t come as a surprise after the 46-year-old had slammed the Hockey India officials recently, for preferential treatment to the men’s team.

Even Hockey India officials confirmed the same, as per a report in Hindustan Times. “She made her intentions clear to HI that she doesn’t want to continue anymore and she has sent her resignation. In all likelihood, it is going to be accepted, ” said an official.

Janneke Schopman vs Hockey India

Last week, after Team India’s match against the USA in the Pro Hockey League, Schopman broke down, and opened up about all that was going wrong, in women’s hockey.

“I felt alone a lot in the last two years, ” she had said. “It has been very hard. Because, I come from a culture where women are respected and valued. I don’t feel that here. I look at the difference at how men’s coaches are treated between me and the men’s coach, or the girls and the men’s team, just in general.”
