Powerlifting is part of the Paralympics since 1964. India has sent a contingent of four paralympic athletes to the Paris Paralympics.

Powerlifting is not part of the Olympic Games. Although it is similar to weightlifting, powerlifting does not have a standardized ruleset. According to reports, the sport is not included in the Olympics because of concerns that it could lead to widespread performance-enhancing drug (PED) abuse.
