The Indian women’s wrestling team, fresh from their historic victory at the U17 World Championships, has found themselves stranded in Jordan. A series of unfortunate events led to the team missing their scheduled flight back home on Saturday night.
Confusion and Disappointment for Indian wrestlers
The nine wrestlers and three coaches were booked on separate flights, with the coaches traveling on Emirates and the wrestlers on Qatar Airways. While the coaches boarded their flights successfully, the Qatar Airways flight carrying the young wrestlers departed two hours earlier than planned.
The exact reasons for this discrepancy remain unclear, leading to confusion and disappointment among the team members and their support staff.
Efforts to bring Indian Wrestling Team Home
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is actively working to bring the stranded wrestlers back to India. They are exploring options for the earliest available flight and ensuring that the young athletes receive the necessary support and assistance during their stay in Jordan.
“The young women wrestlers have missed the flight. There is a lot of confusion about what actually happened. The young wrestlers should not have been booked in a separate flight,” one of the Indian contingent sources told PTI.
Historic achievement at U17 World Championships
The Indian women’s wrestling team’s victory at the U17 World Championships was a remarkable accomplishment. They secured the team title with a total of 185 points, surpassing powerhouse nations like Japan and Kazakhstan.
The team’s impressive performance included five gold medals, one silver, and two bronze medals.
Lessons Learned
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of careful planning and coordination when traveling with large groups, especially young athletes. It is crucial to ensure that all team members are booked on the same flights to avoid such unforeseen circumstances.
As the WFI works to resolve the situation, the Indian women’s wrestling team will undoubtedly be eager to return home and celebrate their historic triumph.
