Indian shooters bag 1-2 at Asian Shooting Championships, still don’t get Paris quotas; Here’s Why

Asian Shooting Championships: Earlier in the tournament Varun Tomar and Rhythm Sangwan had secured Paris quotas at the event.

India’s shooters continued their fine form at the ongoing Asian Shooting Championships 2024 in Jakarta, Indonesia on Friday, as Akhil Sheoran and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar won gold & silver in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event.

In the final, Sheoran ended with a score of 460.2, while Tomar scored 459.0. On the other hand, Thai shooter Thongphaphum Vongsukdee scored 448.8, to take the bronze. Interestingly, as has been the norm in the tournament, top two finishers were supposed to get Paris 2024 Olympic quotas, but that did not happen with the Indian duo.

That was because Indian shooters in this category have already qualified for the Olympics. Back in 2022, Swapnil Kusale had secured the first quota at the World Championships, and then the next one came by Sheoran, at the 2023 Worlds.

Not just that, India won the gold medal in the same team event as well. The team event featured Sheoran, Aishwary Tomar and Swapnil Kusale, who finished with a total of 1758 points. China stood second with 1744, and Korea ended third with 1735 points.
