Indian golfers Shubhankar Sharma, Gaganjeet Bhullar qualify for Paris Olympics

The men's tournament will be held from August 1st to 4th, followed by the women's competition from August 7th to 10th.

Indian golf fans have two reasons to cheer as Shubhankar Sharma and Gaganjeet Bhullar secured their spots for the upcoming Paris Olympics. The International Golf Federation (IGF) released the final men’s qualification rankings on June 17th, confirming their participation.

Earning their stripes

Shubhankar Sharma, currently ranked 48th in the Olympic rankings (219th in the world rankings), brings an impressive resume. This rising star has clinched two titles on the DP World Tour (formerly European Tour) and boasts eight career victories.

Gaganjeet Bhullar, a seasoned campaigner ranked 54th in the Olympics (261st in the world), is a force to be reckoned with. He is an 11-time champion on the Asian Tour and secured a silver medal at the 2006 Asian Games.

Olympic debuts: Shubhankar Sharma, Gaganjeet Bhullar

This prestigious event marks an Olympic debut for both golfers, Shubhankar Sharma and Gaganjeet Bhullar. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Anirban Lahiri (42nd) and Udayan Mane (56th) represented India.

Unfortunately, Lahiri missed out on qualification for Paris due to a limited tournament schedule.

Eyes on Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar

With the men’s side sorted, anticipation builds for the women’s qualifiers. Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar are strong contenders, with the final IGF rankings slated for release on June 24th.

Notably, Aditi etched her name in history at the Tokyo Olympics, securing a commendable fourth-place finish – the best performance ever by an Indian golfer at the Summer Games.
