The Indian chess team celebrated their historic feat of winning double gold in the Chess Olympiad 2024. The players celebrated in a style similar to that of Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma. Both the open and women’s teams created history in Budapest by clinching gold in their respective categories on Sunday, September 22.
Iconic celebrations inspired by Messi and Rohit Sharma
After their outstanding achievement, the Indian chess players were seen overjoyed on the podium, proudly holding the Indian tricolour. Tania Sachdev and D Gukesh recreated Lionel Messi’s iconic walk from the 2022 FIFA World Cup, emerging from either side in a memorable moment. Earlier this year, Rohit Sharma was also seen celebrating in a similar style after leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies.
D Gukesh shines with second Individual Gold
D Gukesh continued his stellar performance, winning his second individual gold medal at the Chess Olympiad. Gukesh played a key role in leading India to their first-ever win in the men’s division, remaining unbeaten with 9 wins and 1 draw from his 10 matches on the top board.
Arjun Erigaisi stands out with Top Performance
Arjun Erigaisi was named the best performer on Board 3, securing 10 wins from 11 matches. Together with Gukesh, the duo earned 21 out of 22 possible points, making history for India in the tournament.
Indian women’s team completes historic double
The Indian women’s team, consisting of Harika Dronavalli, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, Tania Sachdev, and coach Abhijit Kunte, secured the gold medal, completing a historic double for the nation.
