Indian chess stars Gukesh, Erigasi, and Divya rise in rankings after historic Olympiad gold

India's chess scene shines brightly with Arjun Erigaisi and Gukesh D climbing the global rankings after the conclusion of 45th Chess Olympiad.

The hunger for gold ended in Hungary as India won not just one but two gold medals in the recently concluded 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, with both the men’s and women’s teams clinching their maiden golds in the top-tier tournament.

The men’s team, featuring D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, and R Praggnanandhaa, displayed dominance throughout the tournament, with all players winning gold. This performance not only secured the gold medals but also helped them achieve significant rating points.

Arjun climbs to 3rd, Gukesh to 5th

Arjun Erigaisi, who won 9 matches and drew 2 out of 11 in the Chess Olympiad, has now moved up to the 3rd position with a classical rating of 2797.2. Meanwhile, the 18-year-old prodigy Gukesh has climbed to 5th with a rating of 2794.1.

R Praggnanandhaa, despite not playing his best and losing a match, is currently holding the 12th spot in the world rankings with a classical rating of 2746.3. Meanwhile, Vidit Gujrathi, who continues to showcase his talent on the international stage, is ranked 22nd globally with a rating of 2726. Despite facing a slight drop in his ranking, with a +2.1 change in his classical rating, he currently holds the 42nd rank with a rating of 2688.

Massive Rise in Divya Deshmukh’s Ranking

The women’s team also showcased exceptional skill and talent in the tournament. Divya Deshmukh had a fruitful tournament, winning every round. She made impressive strides, climbing four spots to 11th, with a rating increase of +17.5. Meanwhile, Harika Dronavalli, who played 9 rounds, managing 3 wins, 3 draws, and 3 losses, has seen a slight decline in her ranking to 13th.

Vaishali Rameshbabu has faced some challenges recently, dropping to 15th after a decrease of -10.7, with 2 losses, 4 draws, and 3 wins. Tania Sachdev, holding the title of International Master, stands at rank 58 with a rating of 2386, while Vantika Agrawal is ranked 76th with a rating of 2370.
