Indian Chess poised for internal showdown: Viswanathan Anand predicts future World Championship clash

With a strong talent pool, a supportive environment, and a growing sense of respect from established players, Indian chess appears poised for continued success. Viswanathan Anand's prediction of an Indian showdown for the world championship title may not be so far-fetched after all.

Viswanathan Anand, India’s legendary five-time world chess champion, believes the nation’s rapidly rising chess stars could soon be facing each other for the ultimate title.

New generation of contenders emerges

Speaking at a recent event in Chennai, Viswanathan Anand highlighted the remarkable achievements of the current Indian chess generation. “This current Indian generation of chess players is so close to the top that they’re sniffing most things,” he told Indian Express.

He specifically mentioned Arjun Erigaisi (ranked 4th), D Gukesh (ranked 7th), and R Praggnanandhaa (ranked 8th) who are all currently positioned within the top 10 globally. Gukesh, in particular, will be making a historic challenge for the world championship title later this year, with the potential to become the youngest champion ever.

Healthy Rivalry Fuels Success

Arjun Erigaisi, India’s current top-ranked player, acknowledges the healthy competition within the Indian chess circuit. “There is some rivalry between us, but it’s very healthy,” he said. “It only motivates the others to work harder and do better.”

This camaraderie and drive to excel are seen as key factors in India’s growing dominance in the chess world.

Shifting Mindset Among Top Players

Erigaisi also noted a change in how established players approach matches against these young Indian talents. “Back in 2020, we didn’t get too many chances to play against the likes of Magnus Carlsen or others,” he said.

“But if we had played them, they would have probably taken more risks against us… But they wouldn’t take the same risks playing us now, because they know we are capable of punishing them. So there is a certain element of respect we get now.”

Viswanathan Anand wife Aruna reflects on changing roles

Aruna, Viswanathan Anand’s wife and longtime manager, also participated in the discussion. She spoke about the evolving landscape in chess, where women are increasingly playing a prominent role.

“The world is now more accepting of a woman taking on a role,” she said, reflecting on the earlier challenges she faced as Anand’s manager in a male-dominated environment.

Bright Future for Indian Chess

With a strong talent pool, a supportive environment, and a growing sense of respect from established players, Indian chess appears poised for continued success. Viswanathan Anand’s prediction of an Indian showdown for the world championship title may not be so far-fetched after all.
