Indian boxers dominate World Boxing Qualifiers, Abhinash Jamwal, Nishant Dev claim important wins

Amit Panghal (51kg), Sanjeet (92kg), Narender (+92kg), along with women's boxers Jaismine (57kg) and Arundhati Choudhary (66kg), advanced with first-round byes

Indian boxers maintained their impressive form on day three of the second World Boxing Qualifiers for the Paris Olympics. Abhinash Jamwal (63.5kg) and Nishant Dev (71kg) secured decisive victories on Sunday, showcasing their skills and determination.

Jamwal, stepping in for Olympian Shiva Thapa in the second qualifiers, faced Andriejus Lavrenovas of Lithuania in his opening bout. The Himachal Pradesh boxer demonstrated his prowess from the start, landing precise punches and controlling the ring. His confidence soared as the match progressed, earning him a unanimous 5-0 decision from the judges.

Later, world championship bronze medallist Dev also delivered a dominant performance against Armando Bighafa of Guinea-Bissau. From the first minute, Dev dictated the pace of the bout, relentlessly attacking his opponent. His aggressive approach continued into the second round, leaving Bighafa on the defensive and securing another unanimous 5-0 victory for India.

Boxers aim for more Paris Olympics 2024 quotas

Among the ten Indian boxers in the Thai capital, Sachin Siwach (57kg) and Abhimanyu Loura (80kg) had already achieved victories in the initial days of the competition. Meanwhile, Amit Panghal (51kg), Sanjeet (92kg), Narender (+92kg), along with women’s boxers Jaismine (57kg) and Arundhati Choudhary (66kg), advanced with first-round byes.

On Monday, Ankushita Boro will commence her 60kg campaign against Namuun Monkhor of Mongolia, while Loura will face Kelyn Cassidy of Ireland in the 80kg round of 32.

India has already secured three Paris Olympic berths at the Asian Games, and these victories in the qualifiers bolster their prospects further.
