India women’s freestyle wrestlers finish U23 World Championships with four medals

With a total of five medals from both men’s (Graeco-Roman) and women’s events so far, the Indian wrestling team is hoping to increase their tally in the final days.

Indian women’s freestyle wrestlers wrapped up a commendable performance at the U23 World Wrestling Championships in Tirana, Albania, securing four medals in total. The competition saw Indian wrestlers demonstrating their skills and determination on the global stage, bringing home one silver and three bronze medals.

Neha Sharma and Shiksha claim Bronze

Neha Sharma, who has now won back-to-back medals at the U23 World Championships, clinched bronze in the 57 kg category. She fought a close contest against China’s Mingyue Zhang, winning 5-0 to secure her place on the podium. Neha’s consistency continues to showcase the growing strength of India’s women’s wrestling contingent.

Seventeen-year-old Shiksha also made a spectacular debut by claiming bronze in the 65 kg category. Facing formidable Japanese wrestler Rin Teramoto, Shiksha displayed impressive skill and resilience, defeating Teramoto with a score of 6-3. Her performance underscores India’s promising talent in younger athletes stepping onto the international wrestling stage.

Strong finish for India’s Women’s Freestyle Wrestlers

With these victories, the Indian women’s freestyle wrestling team concluded their U23 World Championships campaign on a high note, bringing home a total of four medals. The success adds to India’s growing reputation in women’s wrestling globally, as these athletes continue to make their mark in international tournaments.

India in total have won five medals in the championships till now – four via women’s freestyle wrestlers and other being Vishvajit More in men’s Greco Roman (55kg) who bagged bronze medal.

Men’s Freestyle Wrestlers next

The men’s freestyle wrestling team also saw success in the elimination rounds, with Abhishek Dhaka advancing to the bronze medal match in the 61 kg category. Although he narrowly missed a spot in the final after losing his semifinal bout to Azerbaijan’s Ruslan Abdullayev, Dhaka remains in contention for a medal.

Anirudh (125 kg) and Deepak Nehra (86 kg) are also preparing for their medal quests, as they head into the repechage rounds. The final day of the men’s competition will see experienced Indian wrestlers Sujeet Kalkal and Mohit competing in categories that hold significant medal potential.
