India’s historic win in Bangkok has shook the nation with plaudits flying from all corners for the men’s badminton team. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur also lauded the effort of the Indian shuttlers appreciating their success. Thakur further showed his appreciation by announcing a cash reward of Rs 1 crore to the shuttlers from the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs.

No Indian team has previously reached the final of the Thomas and Uber Cup in its 70-plus year history. In what was India’s first-ever appearance in the tournament finale, they defeated the record 14-time champions Indonesia in the Thomas Cup 2022 final at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand by 3-0 to lift the coveted trophy.
Indian men reached the Thomas Cup semi-finals in 1952, 1955 and 1979 while the women’s team made it to the Uber Cup top-four in 2014 and 2016.
India had entered their maiden Thomas Cup final after defeating Denmark 3-2 in the semifinal. The tie was won in the final men’s singles contest, where HS Prannoy sealed a 13-21, 21-9, 21-12 victory over World No.13 Rasmus Gemke.
Lakshya Sen gave India lead after beating Anthony Ginting in 3 games. In the 2nd match, India’s No. 1 doubles pair of Chirag Shetty & Satwik Rankireddy stunned Indonesia’s pair of Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo. Kidambi Srikanth won the 2nd singles against Jonatan Christie in straight games
