India secure quarterfinal spot at BWF World Junior Championships, know relay scoring system

India secured a thrilling 110-99 victory over Turkiye in their final Group E match, advancing to the quarterfinals of the BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships.

India won over a tough challenge from Turkiye, winning 110-99 in their final Group E match to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships in Nanchang, China, on Wednesday. Looking ahead, India will face Indonesia in the quarterfinals.

Relay scoring system makes debut

This year, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) introduced a relay scoring system for the championships, requiring the winning team to reach 110 points across 10 matches to secure victory.

Despite a strong start with victories against Peru, Azerbaijan, and Mauritius in their earlier matches, India faced a rocky beginning against Turkiye. Tushar Suveer lost the first singles match to Mehmet Can Toremis with a score of 7-11, giving Turkiye the initial advantage.

What is the relay scoring system in Badminton?

In badminton, the relay system is a unique and strategic format for organising tournaments, allowing teams to compete in a series of matches rather than as individual players. This approach is commonly utilised in effective team events such as the mixed team competition at the Olympics or the Sudirman Cup. The formation of each team includes a balanced mix of male and female players, creating a diverse playing environment.

The matches are typically arranged in a specific sequence, starting with a mixed doubles match, followed by men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, and women’s doubles. This predetermined order adds an exciting layer of strategy to the competition, as teams must adapt their game plans based on the matchups.

Scoring in this format is straightforward yet competitive, with each match played to a set number of points or sets. As the tournament progresses, the overall points accumulated by each team determine the winner. The team that wins the most matches or secures the highest total points is ultimately declared the champion.

Strong comeback by Indian team

N Srinidhi and U Reshika then took charge, propelling India ahead with a score of 22-18. The Indian team maintained their lead throughout the tie, even as Toremis applied pressure in the singles and doubles matches. However, India’s female players in both singles and doubles established significant leads in their matches, effectively neutralizing Toremis’s impact.
